Her PhD thesis examines the uses of pragmatic devices such as like and or something by non-native speakers of New Zealand English in terms of frequency and functions. The research involved a detailed discourse analysis of the data as well as considerations of L1 interference and accommodation to the interlocutor as factors potentially influencing non-native uses of these forms. Throughout her studies, Agnes has been involved in tutoring for a range of undergraduate Linguistics courses.
Agnes’ main research interests lie within the field of sociolinguistics, in particular cross-cultural and interlanguage pragmatics, the use of vague language and the connections between language and identity.
