Profile

Kerry is an academic researcher currently working on the AMEP RC longitudinal study Language training and settlement success: Are they related?

Coming from a teaching background, she has taught in secondary schools, adult migrant education and higher education. Kerry has worked in English language teaching, TESOL and Applied Linguistics since the 1980s. Her interest in language education in developing countries led to teaching posts in Mozambique, Cameroon and Timor-Leste. These experiences inspired an interest in colonial languages and their impact on local language ecologies. Prior to arriving at Macquarie, Kerry taught English and Applied Linguistics at Griffith University in Queensland whilst undertaking doctoral research.

Kerry’s research has focused on language policy and sociolinguistics. Her interests lie in multilingualism, language and identity, language dispositions and language maintenance, revival and reform. In addition she has an ongoing interest in the teaching and learning of languages, particularly teaching methods, curriculum and materials design.

Thesis Title:

The ecology of language planning in Timor-Leste: A study of language policy, planning and practices in identity construction.

Kerry has spoken at a number of national and international conferences about her research in Timor-Leste.
