Profile
Vera is a sociolinguist. She has tutored LING110 Language Description, and LING216 Introduction to Sociolinguistics at undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, Vera has tutored LING903 Languages and Cultures in Contact. Her recent research is an ethnography of communication study of an African immigrant group’s linguistic practices in Australia. That work was workshopped at the 2006 African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific (AFSAAP) conference held at Macquarie University.
Vera currently holds a Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship and is working on a sociolinguistic ethnographic study of African immigrants and their language learning and settlement trajectories in Australia. Her work aims to shed light on the dynamics of globalization, pedagogy, identity and ideology that impact on language learners as they make meaning of expectations of life in new settings.
Research Interests:
Vera’s research interests include discourse-based studies of immigrant groups, studies of English language training and settlement issues including gender, and studies of social exclusion and inclusion of minority non-native English speaking immigrant groups.
